What is a Projector Lamp?

There are many lamp options available. A projector lamp is made up of a Bulb In a module. The bulb is an advanced piece of technology developed over the last 20 years providing high brightness, contrast and is designed to last. There are only 7 companies worldwide manufacturing bulbs, the main one being Philips. The bulb manufacturer's then send the bulbs to the Projector Manufacturers (ie Sony, BenQ, Epson etc...) who put them into a module, creating a Genuine lamp sometimes refered to as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

What is a Copy Lamp? Some companies in Asia have started making cheap copy lamps and bulbs, and as with any cheap copy these: Aren't as reliable Don't perform as well Don't last as long In some cases they can even be dangerous. The lamp in your projector is the result of a highly complex manufacturing process combining hazardous chemicals inside a glass capsule pressurised to over 200 atmospheres that, once 20kV of power is supplied, will then heat to over 6,000 degrees C. Though the prices can be tempting these copy lamps or bulbs will usually offer poor value for the user.

Spotting a Copy Lamp

Spotting copy lamps isn't always easy:

• Some come with a "Compatible module" to fit the projector.
• Some sell under their own brand but others try to pass themselves off as original products

What to look out for:

• Look out for lamps described as "compatible"
• An unknown brand name mentioned as well as the name of the projector manufacturer.
• Options to buy a "Bulb Only" Version. It is very few projector manufacturers that offer this option.
• Lamps that are just too cheap to be original products.
